Noto Peninsula Earthquake - Reaching out to animals in need

We offer our deepest condolences to those affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake in 2024.

We pray for the quickest possible assistance for those in need. During these difficult times, we would like to offer whatever aid we can, and are monitoring the ongoing situation.

For those who cannot bring their pets with them during evacuation or are unable to take care of them in their homes, we will take responsibility for the pets free of charge until they are able to live with their families again.

We will be grateful to accept any items such as food, pet sheets or any other pet related items.

If you have any concerns about your pets, please don’t hesitate to contact us at ARK.

A Message from Elizabeth Oliver

ARK has been rescuing animals from disaster zones since the 1995 Hanshin Awaji Earthquake. We also took in over 100 animals after the earthquake in Eastern Japan in 2011. We have taken the opportunity to learn from each disaster.

One thing we have learnt is not to go into the disaster area without assessing the state of affairs there. Many groups move in immediately, so the infrastructure is already under strain. We know that we need to be well prepared with items like carry cases, water and food for both animals and ourselves, posters, business cards, etc. Our first task is to help people where they need it most.

Bringing people’s pets back to our shelter is one of the ways we can help. This service is provided free of charge. We ask the owners to contact us at least once in a while. If we don’t hear from them for a couple of years, the animal is taken in as an ARK animal. Before we adopted this policy, several disaster animals died of old age in our care.

Access to Ishikawa Prefecture is very limited. Many roads are closed or partly closed. We are still trying to assess the best ways to help and are determined to do so.

As in the past, ARK will help as many animals as we can in whatever way is best for them.
