To commemorate the retirement of our Chief Executive, Clarissa Baldwin OBE, after 40 years at Dogs Trust, we have created the Clarissa Baldwin International Award for Excellence in Animal Welfare. The award is to be presented annually to an individual or organisation, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to animal welfare outside of the UK. Last week the inaugural award was presented to Elizabeth Oliver of Animal Rescue Kansai by Clarissa Baldwin OBE at the International Companion Animal Welfare Conference in Istanbul,Turkey.

Clarissa was delighted to present the award to Elizabeth and we can think of no better person to receive the first award. Elizabeth has dedicated her life to animals. She founded Animal Refuge Kansai in 1990 and she has saved the lives of thousands of dogs and cats in Japan. The staff and volunteers at ARK work tirelessly to rescue and rehabilitate unwanted, abandoned and abused animals in order to find them permanent, safe and loving homes. They rescued hundreds of animals from the Kobe earthquake in 1995 and the Tohuku earthquake and tsunami in 2011. This year Elizabeth crowned her achievements by opening an incredible new rehoming centre that aims to rehome many more dogs and save them from the threat of destruction. As a long-standing friend of Dogs Trust and someone who has made such a telling and lasting difference to the lives of so many animals, Elizabeth is a very fitting winner of the inaugural Clarissa Baldwin International Award for Excellence in Animal Welfare.
