ユキチ スタッフ 小林 彰
2年前の秋にアークにやって来たユキチ。
迷子犬の捜索中に偶然見つかった子でした。推定年齢は高齢でしたが、とても人懐っこくて人に飼われていた過去があるように感じられました。幸せになって欲しいという願いを込めて、幸吉と書いてユキチと名付けられました。放浪していたので健康状態はあまり良くなく、身体中にできものが多く、手術でいくつも切除する必要がありました。そして、その中に肥満細胞腫という悪性腫瘍があり、しかもそれは転移しやすいものでした。高齢という事もあり今を逃すと大がかりな手術をするのは将来的には難しく、切除してもまたすぐ転移してしまう恐れもありました。でも、食欲旺盛で人と触れ合ったり散歩も大好きで、まん丸な可愛らしい眼でスタッフにもボランティアさんにも愛されていたユキチ。切除してもいずれ再発するかもしれないけれど、その間穏やかに長生きできるかもしれないし、きっと家族も見つかるはず、と願って指の一部も切除する少し難しい手術でしたが、無事に乗り越えてくれました。
その後は歩行にも影響なく散歩も楽しめていました。幸せ太りしてしまうくらい元気になり、食事も摂れていましたが、1年ほど経ったあと、また右膝に腫瘍ができてしまいました。
検査した結果、肥満細胞腫である可能性が高く、また病魔と付き合っていかなければならなくなりましたが、最期まで病気を感じさせない明るさを振りまいてくれました。
偶然アークにたどり着いてくれたユキチの犬生を、少しでも穏やかに過ごしてもらえて良かったと思えましたし、私たちスタッフも、愛嬌をふりまいてみんなに愛されたユキチに出会うことができて本当に良かったと思います。

ユキチが虹の橋を渡った旨のお手紙、ありがとうございました。悲しいですが、スタッフの皆様の手厚いケアの下、最期まで幸福な時間を過ごせた事と思います。永い間のケア、毎日、お疲れ様でした。先月ご連絡を頂き、面会の機会を持てて良かったです。羽束川（はつかがわ）の土手を、彼を抱えて登った時の感触が両手に未だ残っています。彼はスポンサーとして支援した初めての犬でした。これからもスポンサーとして他の子を支えようと思います。
犬猫は好きだけど、様々な理由で飼えない方、里親に迎えたいけど、未だ運命の犬猫に巡り会えていない方。特に関西にお住まいでしたら、能勢か篠山でスポンサーを募集している犬猫に面会するようお勧めします。しっくり来ないようでしたら、残念ながら縁が無かったのですから、見送って他の犬猫に面会して見れば良いのです。スポンサーだと、特定の犬猫との距離が縮まるのを実感できます。ユキチと、いつもの様に羽束川へ散歩に行った帰り、土手の前で立ち止まって、私をチラ見して来ました。「土手を登れなくなったから、抱え上げてくれ」と言いたいのだと理解するのに若干の時間が掛かりました。彼との散歩は、その日が最後となりました。別れは辛いですが、その時の眼差し、両手のずっしりとした感触と温かさを思い出しています。スポンサー制度が、里親に次ぐ支援方法として更に広がるよう、祈っています。
Yukichi Staff Akira Kobayashi
Yukichi came to ARK 2 years ago when we happened upon him while searching for a missing dog.
He was clearly an older dog, but was so friendly that we felt sure there was a family somewhere in his past. We named him Yukichi using two characters meaning fortunate and lucky in the hope that the rest of his days would be fortuitous. Sadly, his health suffered from his time as a stray: he had numerous tumours, many of which we had removed surgically. Among them, we found a malignant mast cell tumour, which we were told was prone to metastases. At his advanced age, we didn’t want to leave Yukichi open to needing major surgery later on, but we knew it was possible that the tumours would recur as quickly as we had them removed. But this delightful, round-eyed dog was loved by staff and volunteers alike. While aware that they might metastatize, we hoped he would find a hope and live out his life until then and opted for surgery which involved the removal of part of a toe. Yukichi loved walks and being around people. The surgery was somewhat complicated, but successful. His surgery did not spoil his love of walks.
He ate so well he even gained a few curves, but a year later, a tumour appeared on his right knee. Tests indicated that it was another mast cell tumour: Yukichi had to battle disease again. Until the very end, Yukichi’s behaviour bore no inkling of his battle. I am happy in the knowledge that we made at least a small difference to the life of a wonderful dog who, by coming to ARK by chance, brightened the lives of the staff with his charm.

If you like dogs and cats but are not able to adopt for whatever reason, or perhaps just haven’t met the right animal, I would like to recommend going to Nose and Sasayama to meet the sponsor animals, especially if you live in Kansai. If it doesn’t seem like a good fit, you can meet another sponsor animal.
As a sponsor, you can really feel closer to the dog or cat you choose. I went on a walk with Yukichi to Hatsukagawa, as usual.
He stopped before the bank and glanced at me. I knew he was saying “I can’t climb the bank anymore, so kindly pick me up and carry me, would you?”. That was my last day with him. It is very hard to say goodbye, but I will always remember his expression and his weight and warmth in my arms. I truly hope that the sponsor program will be second only to the adoption program.
