私は約10年前、捨て猫たちを保護した経験があります。彼らはまだ生後1年にも満たない幼い猫たちで、家に来た当時は身体中が泥やほこりで汚れており、痩せ細って弱々しい様子でした。何より、人間に対する警 戒心が非常に強く、こちらが少しでも近づこうとすると怯えたように逃げてしまうほどでした。

それでも、日々の世話や関わりを通じて少しずつ距離が縮まり、時間をかけて私に心を開いてくれるようになりました。その時安心できる居場所を必要としていただけと強く感じました。

そして同時に、こうした状況に置かれている動物たちは、決してこの子たちだけではないという現実を思い知らされました。人間の身勝手な都合や無関心によって、たくさんの動物たちが不幸な目に遭っています。

この経験を通して、私は「少しでも動物たちに幸せな人生を送ってほしい」という思いを抱くようになり、その気持ちはやがて動物保護の道へと私を導いてくれました。自分にできることは決して大きくはないかもしれませんが、ひとつひとつの命に丁寧に向き合い、寄り添っていきたいと思います。

アークへ転職したのは、今年の5月で、以前は牛を約14,000頭飼育している北海道の牧場で1年間働いていました。主に育成業務に就いていたのですが、牛飼いの「楽しさ」「辛さ」の両方を経験して、牛飼いになることは難しいと思い、転職を決意しました。それでも動物と関わる仕事に就きたいと考えていた所、アークの逆スカウトがあり、メンテナンススタッフとして入社しました。

メンテナンス業務ではありますが、動物と関わることに変わりはないので、毎日癒されながら業務に励んでいます。インパクトや草刈り機など、メンテナンスで使用する道具のほとんどを触ったことすらなかったので、1から覚えている最中です。早く仕事に慣れて、動物たちが過ごしやすい環境作り、インフラ整備にも力を入れたいと考えています。

入社してまだ4ヶ月の新人ですが、よろしくお願いします。

I lived with rescued stray cats for about ten years. They were not even a year old when they first made their appearance, covered in mud and debris and painfully thin and weak.

They were very cautious around people and ran away fearfully when I tried to get even a little close to them.

As the days went by, the distance between us diminished. They gradually opened up to me. I realized that they really just needed to feel safe.

At the same time, I realized that they were not the only ones in the same circumstances.

Animals often end up in dire straits because of humans’ lack of concern or compassion for them. That realization led me to start thinking about how I could make animals’ lives better and in turn to working for an animal welfare organization. I am aware that I may only have a small part to play, but I hope I can touch the life of each of the animals I work with by facing each one with the utmost care.

I started working for ARK in May this year. Before that, I worked at a cattle farm in Hokkaido which housed 14,000 cattle. My main duties were caring for the animals, so I experienced both joy and difficulties. I decided to change jobs because I found the task rather too difficult. I wanted to continue working with animals, though. ARK approached me through an online job site and I joined the staff as a maintenance person.

My job is in maintenance, but I certainly still work with animals. Under their calming influence, I feel that I am able to work really hard. I had never even held an impact driver or lawn mower, or most of the other tools, let alone operated them, before coming to ARK. I’m in the process of learning how to use each one from scratch. I really want to learn my trade quickly and improve the environment and infrastructure for our animals. I am a newbie who has only been at ARK for four months. Thank you in advance for your support.
