動物との共生を目指す介護施設
日本の高齢化社会では、人間だけでなく犬や猫も寿命が延びたことで「ペットの高齢化」も進んでおり、飼い主とペットの高齢化が同時に進行する「老老介護」や、ペットの老齢に伴う変化への対応といった課題が生じています。アークでも飼い主の病気、入院、施設入居、あるいは死亡を理由に毎年多くのご相談を受けており、この問題を日々肌で感じています。
アークでは、終生飼育を前提に希望者さんにお迎えを検討している子との5年後、10年後の生活をイメージしていただきながら、動物と人の年齢や家庭環境、動物の性格などを見ながらマッチングを行います。
社会全体として人間同様にペットもシニア期に入る前から適切な介護の準備をすること、そして飼い主の体調や状況の変化に対応できるようなサービスや環境の整備が必要とされています。

ウォッカとウィスキーが介護施設へ譲渡されました

昨年の9月、介護施設を運営されているケアホーム板橋さんより”飼い主の高齢化による入院や施設入所によって、やむを得ず保護される動物が多くいる”という社会課題を解決するためのチャレンジとしてアークの子を施設にお迎えしたいとご相談をいただきました。介護施設への譲渡はアークとして初めての試みです。何度も話し合いを行い、約1年の準備期間を経て、今年の5月に13才になるシニア猫のウォッカとウィスキーの譲渡が決まりました。
ケアホーム板橋さんには、6年前より2匹のスタッフ犬が利用者や職員と共に生活しており、専属のお世話係として、獣看護師の資格を持つ常勤職員を配置。また施設の扉は職員の許可がないと開けられないため、猫が外部に逃げ出す心配もありません。譲渡当日、猫たちを連れて伺ったところ、自由に動き回れる広いスペースと落ち着ける空間、多くの利用者や職員から愛情を注いでもらえる、安心してお任せできる温かい環境が整えられていました。
猫たちの鳴き声は、利用者との話のきっかけとなり、また近くを通るだけで職員たちは、自然と笑顔になる。飼い主さんが介護施設に入所するために手放された『ウォッカ』と『ウィスキー』は、こうして迎えられることとなりました。

施設は「家」、職員は「家族」だと思って仕事をしています。犬猫たちも家族です。職員のみんなで家族を大事にしたいし、お世話をしていく。みんなで目をかけて一緒にやっていくことに意味があると思っています。またこの先、犬猫たちをユニットで迎えるようになったら、利用者さんは自分以外の小さな生き物を日々お世話していくことになります。人間以外に「おはよう」とか「おやすみ」を言える環境になります。これはすごく大きい。楽しみです。目標として3年以内には新しいユニット作りを実現しようと、職員のみんなで話し合ったばかりです。確実にやっていきたいと思ってます。また、飼い主さんとペットが離れることなく、一緒に安心して暮らせることが私たちの理想です。アークさんから次はシニア犬のお迎えを検討しています。うちに来て、24時間人が途切れることない環境で、最後まで温かく過ごしてもらいたいと思っています。
平成医療福祉グループの介護施設として保護犬や保護猫を受け入れやすい環境を整えて、この取り組みが各地のグループ施設などにも広まって、こうした活動が注目されるようになったら、保護犬や保護猫を減らすことにもつながると思います。最終的にはそこを目指していこうと動いています。

Elder-care Home Strives Towards Life with Animals

Japan’s aging society is not just the realm of people. The in　creasing longevity of dogs and cats has brought about an “aging animal society”. Problems related to the elderly caring for the elderly and aging pets who need care are food for thought. Many animals come to ARK because their owners have become ill, have been hospitalized or have gone into care homes. We see this on a daily basis, so it is an issue very close to our hearts.
ARK asks clients to imagine how their lifestyles may change after five or ten years. We try to find the right match by looking at factors such as the age of both the animal and the adopter as well as the animal’s personality.
Preparation for senior years as a society is as important for animals as it is for people. Animal owners must also cater for changes in their physical state and living environment.

Vodka & Whiskey Adopted by an Elder-care Home

Care Home Itabashi faces the problem of residents having to give up their beloved pets when they go into assisted living first hand and approached ARK in September last year with a suggestion for tackling this social problem: they wanted to adopt animals to live with their residents. Many discussions were held; preparation took almost a year, but two ARK cats moved into their new home at Care Home Itabashi in May this year.
For the past six years, two on-staff dogs have shared their home with the residents and staff of Care Home Itabashi. A qualified on-staff veterinary nurse is assigned to their care. Security designed to keep residents safe also prevents the cats from making an unplanned exit – the doors can only be opened by staff. The cats were provided with a spacious area, in which they can relax or walk around at will. ARK staff were also happy to see that they are given a great deal of affection by the residents and staff!
Meows from the two cats spark conversations amongst the residents and the staff break into smiles just at seeing them walk by.
Vodka and Whiskey came to ARK when their owner went into assisted living. Now they are the ones who have made their home in an elder-care facility.

From the Director of Care Home Itabashi, Junichi Ozawa

My philosophy is that our facility is “home” and the staff are “family” to the residents. Cats and dogs are also family. Our staff want to provide excellent care of that family. I believe that there is meaning in us all looking after them. Further down the track, when we are able to have animals in the units, our residents will derive enormous pleasure from looking after a living being smaller than themselves. They’ll be able to say “good morning” and “good night” to someone other than a person! This is huge! I eagerly await that day! The staff have just discussed our hope to achieve this new unit within three years. I am personally very enthusiastic about it. Our idea is to create an environment in which owners can live safely with pets.
We are currently considering the adoption of a 12 year old dog from ARK. She was surrendered to ARK when her owner went into assisted living. We would like to see her live out her life surrounded by people 24/7 in a loving environment.
As part of the Heisei Medical Welfare Group our care facility will forge the way for others in the group to follow our lead by setting up an environment conducive to having rescued cats and dogs living with us. We hope that by doing so, we will reduce the number of homeless animals. That’s our objective!
