わかるなあ。犬との生活は本当に最高だから、一匹飼うとつい「もう一匹」と欲が出てしまう。楽しさが倍増する？確かに。でも苦労も倍増…それもまた、一つの現実だよね。

けれど、もし飼い主の愛情という天秤が、片方にだけ大きく傾いてしまったら？僕の知る、ある二匹の犬たちに起きた話を紹介するね。

子犬のオリーとロリー。最初は仲良く過ごしていたけれど、穏やかなロリーに比べ、オリーは少しずつ「いたずらっ子」になっていった。もしかしたら、オリーは焦っていたのかもしれない。たとえ叱られてでも注目を浴びたい。自分を見てもらえないのはロリーのせいなんだ…幼い彼は、そう思い込んでしまったんだろうね。

事態は急速に悪化していった。オリーは一日中クレートに閉じ込められ、一方でロリーはソファの王様として、飼い主の膝の上でくつろぐ日々。当然、オリーは抗議するようにクレートを噛み破り、ときには家具を壊した。そうするしかなかったんだ。ロリーがソファで優雅に過ごしている間、自分は「牢屋」にいたのだから。

やがて、未去勢のオス同士だった二匹は激しい喧嘩を始めた。もしアークの仲間たちなら、適切なケアと去勢、そしてトレーナーの介在で解決の道を探り、「両者が愛を感じられる環境」を最優先しただろう。けれど、現実は残酷だった。飼い主はオリーの「問題行動」を理由に、彼をアークへと連れてくる決断をした。

アークにやってきたオリーは、去勢手術の際に衝撃の事実が判明する。獣医師が見つけたのは、オリーのすべての歯が「デニベリング」という処置で、外科的に短く削り取られた痕だった。多くの国で違法とされる凄惨な虐待。彼はその絶望に、たった一人で耐えていたんだ。

しかし、オリーは屈しなかった。アークで本来の輝きを取り戻した彼は、この上なく愛らしい姿を見せてくれた。そんな彼を理解し、丸ごと受け入れてくれる家族に出会うまで、わずか数週間。今、オリーは自分を「宝物」と呼んでくれる温かな家庭で、最高の第二の人生を謳歌している。

あんなに酷いことをされても、なお人を信じ、愛し返そうとする。犬って、本当に素晴らしい存在だと思わないかい？

I get it. Dogs are so great that folks get one and they want another one. Double the fun? Sure. Double trouble? That too. But what happens when they start to like only one of them? Let me tell you what happened to a couple of dogs I know.

Olly and Rolly, both puppies, got along okay at first. Then Olly got a bit more mischievous than his more placid house-mate. Maybe he sometimes got annoyed with Rolly, because he knew he has to work so much harder just to get atten-tion, even negative attention. It didn’t seem fair. Maybe it was Rolly’s fault?

That’s when things went downhill fast. Olly found himself in a playpen all day, while Rolly is the king of the sofa, or on the owner’s lap. Naturally, he tried to chew his way out. He might have destroyed a bit of furniture, too. Why wouldn’t he? Rolly is on the sofa and he’s in jail.

Then the two dogs, both intact boys, start to fight. What would my friends at ARK do? They’d want both dogs to feel loved. They’d want them both to be neutered. Maybe they’d recommend a trainer to help the owner learn how to make that happen. That’s not what this owner did, though. Olly stayed in his cell while Rolly got all the attention. When he growled, his owner didn’t think about the benefits of training or neutering, he decided to bring Olly to ARK because “his behaviour was unacceptable”.

So Olly came to ARK. When he was neutered, the vet found that all his teeth had been surgically shortened in a process called “denivelling”. It is a form of mutilation that’s illegal in many countries. Poor Olly! What a life!

Fast forward to his life at ARK. Olly turned out to be one of the nicest chaps you could meet! He found a home in a mat-ter of weeks and is living his best life with an adoring family that knows how lucky they are to have him. Aren’t dogs just marvelous?
