暑い夏の日、アークにマイクロチップの登録機関から16才の犬と13才の猫が迷子になっているよって連絡がきたんだって。センターに保護された犬は脱水症状を起こしていて、すぐに飼い主さんの自宅や職場に何度も電話をしたけど、繋がらない。車で2時間かかるぐらい遠い場所だったけど、アークのスタッフがお迎えにいこうかって相談していた時、センターに飼い主さんがお迎えにきてくれた!!その子は認知症を患っていて、迷子になってしまったんだって。ずっと探していたから、電話に出られなかったんだね。その後、病院に直行して、すっかり元気になったって。お家に帰れて良かったね。

一方、13才の猫はね…。アークのスタッフが連絡したら、すでに引っ越しをしていてやっと連絡できた時、飼い主さんは、全く反省していなかったんだって。12歳の猫が9ヶ月もの間、迷子になっていたのに。

保護された彼は貧血で脱水症状を起こし、やせ細っていた。シニアの猫にとって、野良猫としての生活は辛かったよね。僕には家族が彼を探そうともしなかったなんて伝えられなかった。でも、今は体力も回復し、本来の人懐っこい性格や美しい姿を取り戻して、穏やかな生活を送っているよ。

When my friends at ARK get an email from the microchip registrar about a lost animal, they go straight into action. Last summer, they had two such emails, the first for a 16 year old dog, the second for a 13 year old cat.

The dog had been impounded. Mr Dog was dehydrated and it was a Friday afternoon; there was no answer from the owner’s home or work phone and it was a two-hour drive to the pound, but they didn’t want to leave a senior dog in a pound over the weekend and were about to head out when a call came to say the family were on their way to the pound. What a relief!

The dog, suffering mild senility, had wandered off. The owners had been desperately worried and were enormously relieved to hear that he was safe. They took him straight from the pound to the vet. I’m happy to say he made a full recovery!

Poor Mr Cat was not quite so lucky. It wasn’t easy for ARK staff to find his owner – she had moved house! Imagine their surprise when she showed no contrition at all for leaving a 12 year old cat out in the elements for nine whole months!

Life as a stray took its toll on the senior cat. He was anaemic, dehydrated and emaciated. Of course, we didn’t tell him that his family hadn’t even bothered looking for him. He made a steady recovery in foster care, and emerged as a glorious, affectionate cat.
