Congratulations on the 20th Anniversary of ARK!
20 years ago in Japan, more than 1,000,000 dogs and
cats were killed at the government facilities.
10% of them were sent to animal experiment facilities.
I used to see dogs and cats everywhere. A lot of dogs
and cats died as a result of negligent of pet owners
who kept too many dogs or cats.
I sincerely appreciate your work and long-time diligent
effort in saving miserable animals in Japan.
I hope that progressive shelters like ARK and its
actions can save more animals that need help.

Visiting Japan in 1951 on behalf of the American Humane Association,
then-Los Angeles SPCA public relations director Richard Hathcock searched
in nine cities for any surviving trace of humane societies that had
corresponded with the AHA before the outbreak of World War II.
Hathcock in Tokyo found one 71-year-old man trying to revive the Tokyo
Humane Society, whose facilities had been firebombed. Hathcock found not
even a lingering memory of the humane societies that had once existed in
Yokohama, Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Moji, and
Shemonoseki.

Unfortunately, a visitor to Japan today could repeat the same itinerary with much the same result — except in Osaka, where Animal Refuge Kansai
appears to have become the first humane society in Japan to maintain animal
care operations for 20 consecutive years.

In recent years several other humane organizations have begun in other parts of Japan, inspired by the example of Animal Refuge Kansai. Soon the
Japanese humane community may recover the momentum that it appeared to
have more than 70 years ago, before a generation of leadership was lost.
ARK can be expected to continue to show the way.

私の私心を読んでください。
1995.1.17に発生した「兵庫県南部地震」が「A・R・K」と私を結びつける結果となった。そして、皆さんから 多くのことを学習させていただきました。来年は、設立20周年とお伺い致しました。「おめでとうございます」と言って良いものやら、このような施設・活動が不要になることが「おめでとう」の終着駅なのか、とも考えさせられます。オリバー代表はじめ、スタッフ皆々様のご努力に敬意を表すると共に、心より感謝致しております。「A・R・K」の活動方針・方向が、多くの動物愛護活動家の指針となった
部分もあります。残念ながら、このような施設が不要となる時代がくることはないでしょう。時間がかかっても、「アーク:篠山」を完成させ、動物達の救済・活動家の育成など、幅広く動物愛護活動の見本となることを願っております。微力ながら、応援を継続させていただきたいと思っています。20周年のイベントを楽しみにしております。

もしも、自分が…
私がいつも不思議に思うことは、人間に与えられている権利が、
どうして他の動物にも与えられないのかということです。
動物と接するときに、自分の心の中で、とてもシンプルな質問を投げかけてください。
もしも、自分が（または自分の子どもが）狭い折に閉じ込められたら？
もしも、自分が生まれてすぐに母親から引き離されたら？
もしも、自分が虐待されるのを恐れながら、飢えと寒さに震えていたら？
もしも、自分に飼い主が現れずに、殺されていくならば？
…それほど人間は動物よりもえらいのでしょうか？　
こうしている間にも人は同じ過ちを繰り返しています。
私がＡＲＫの活動を応援する理由もとてもシンプルです。
20周年を迎えても、まだ私たちは、動物たちはＡＲＫを必要としています。

一見道は異なりますが、私たちは共通のゴールに向けて歩んでいると思います。
